I'm off in two weeks and am having a last minute worry about what to take with me. I'm doing some conservation work whilst i'm out there and also planning to go on a three day trek.

Anyone have any tips on what to take?

This is a good site - be a Smart Traveller

http://www.smartraveller.gov.au

bring cloths hate sunblock and money

Bring condoms! Australians love Americans.

It depends where in Australia you are going. If your three day trek is in the NSW or Victorian mountains, you will need cold weather gear and be prepared for snow. If it is in the tropics, you will need a good hat and sunblock. Australia is a big place, bigger than the USA (without Alaska), and has a large range of climates.

My mother once gave me some very sensible advice when I was going through this exercise of last minute worrying - "It's a civilised place. If you forgot it you can buy it."

It makes travelling a little less worrying if you remember that.

Waterless cleansing wipes (for the face/body), sunblock, insect repellent, ziploc bags, bandanas (several), sunglasses, a good ventilated sun hat, travel underwear (hand wash/quick-dry), lip balm with sun protection, blister plasters, and tweezers.

Have fun!

Many visitors from the US and Europe arrive in June/July and are surprised to discover that it is both cold and wet here in the southern half of Australia at that time of year. Make sure you have some warm clothing, and something waterproof for your trekking, and she'll be apples.

We do have stores here, so you will be able to buy anything that you forget. Don't stress too much about what you pack, and enjoy your visit.

It is very important to check customs regulation in Australia. They are quite strict!

You can find the complete list here....

About a month ago I called a travel agency to book hotel and airline tickets. I received a confirmation for the airline but not the hotel. After I called her the travel agent said she would take care of it we do have reservations. I've been calling her for over a week and she is not returning my calls. I called the hotel and they are all booked with no reservations under my name. What rights do I have.? What is my next step?

Did they charge your credit card for both or just the airfare? If they airfare part is ok, either cancel the whole thing and dispute the credit card charge, or keep the airfare part and book the rest yourself. Obviously if that hotel is booked you need to find another one ASAP, probably on your own... then go to the BBB website and file a complaint there. Main thing is to get your trip booked. Travel companies are known for being idiots so do what you have to do. But really there's no reason to use travel agencies anymore.

Idea where to travel for honeymoon?

Posted by Apichai Chomsing | 9:03 PM | 0 comments »

We are trying to plan our honeymoon for this July. We live in Washington state, and really can't afford airfare to Mexico or we would be on our way, so we are thinking of going to Canada. We can drive there, and wouldn't have to pay for the pass ports. Does anyone know any great places in Canada to stay on the west coast side? A city or specific hotel would be great! Thanks for your help!

Do you want to go to Canada or just to B.C. -- it seems from your question it is the latter because driving to Alberta and beyond might strain the budget and driving time. But you already have in Washington State a beautiful seacoast and the breathtaking Cascades. But a few suggestions:

Victoria is a beautiful little city with nothing quite comparable to it in Washington State (or elsewhere in North America, for that matter). Vancouver is vibrant and thriving and can be compared in certain ways with Seattle (Vancouver's Gastown district and Seattle's Pioneer Square are practically interchangable) but is distinctive by cultural effects of its much greater Asian communities (south Asian as well as oriental Asian) as well as its libertarianism (it is almost impossible to get to Vancouver's downtown peninsula without traveling though at least part of its notorious near east side). The long finger lakes regions in B.C.'s Rocky Mountain valleys (Okanagan, Kootenay and Duncan) have nothing comparable in Washington State.

If you do choose to honeymoon in B.C. by all means enjoy the wines! B.C.s white wines are generally better than Washington's (some - such as Okanagan pinot gris - are among the best in the world); B.C's red wines are often not quite as good as Washington's best but many come close.

Banff and Lake Louise

...how about riding the Canadien Railway?

Take the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry and/or BC ferry.

It's like a less expensive less snooty cruise. You can take your car (If you like). You can get off at any port (and stay at a quaint B&B) then pick up the next ferry passing through. You can get a little birth with bed and washroom. You don't need a passport when travelling by land or sea. The scenery and wildlife are amazing. There are park rangers on board who give interesting lectures throughout the journey. You can design your own trip. You can get to little towns that the big cruise ships can't get to.

The Grand Canyon...

I went there with my husband on our honeymoon. We stayed in Kingman Arizona on historic Route 66, in a boutique hotel (the Brunswick). Then we went to the Grand Canyon the next day. We went to the west rim where they have just finished building the sky bridge on the Hualapai Reservation but you could also go to the North or South Rim. But the west rim is just as nice, maybe not so big.

Also the west rim is within driving distance to Las Vegas (where we got married). There is a lot to do in and around that area, aside from gambling. Best of luck and congratulations.

Vancouver's nice. It's been a while since I was there, so I'm not sure on hotels. If there's a Hilton or similar, at least you'd be familiar with the level of comfort to expect.

We have a cruise to Mexico for 6 days only 69 dollars and more to come.

http://www.earnvacations.com/Freedom and learn to book vacations so cheap that they are not allowed to be advertised to the public.

Usually if you're booking to go to Cuba, they will offer an insurance policy to go along with your trip to Cuba.

Even if you are booking through the US (given that you have a travel license for Cuba), travel companies should offer insurance.

Which country are you booking from?

Certainly isn't the Canadian companies, by the way the Transat rep at Rio Luna advised us last year that there is a reciprocal arrangement betwen Canada and Cuba should a Canadian become ill in Cuba.

No idea, never had any problem getting insurance when I've been to Cuba, been 3 times and was there at Easter but got insurance with no problems.

As a US citizen it is illegal for us to visit Cuba, so an insurance company will not insure you.

They are probably USA owned.

Travel tips for a working holiday in Australia?

Posted by Apichai Chomsing | 2:03 PM | 0 comments »

I'm planning on leaving in late February and staying for about a year. If anyone has been on a working holiday there any tips you can give me would be greatly appreciated!

many backpackers i have met, go to mildura, victoria and you can generally get work all year round. mostly fruit picking or packing.

bring a suit, your resume, 2 references, and register with an employment agency. Don't srrive in Sydney, then stayfor 12 months. Travel around!

Check out Perth in WA - it is supposed to be amazing (I leave in a week for WA)

bring ya drinking shoes. also make sure you head inland and experience the centre of the joint

I am considering to study BTEC First Diploma in Travel and Tourism (Level 2) course which includes work experience but is this enough to work for as a air hostess or maybe travel agency when after passing this course?

If not then please help me choose what the correct 'career pathway' it is to become a travel agency.

http://getinfo.iarin.com

you can get much information in this website, If you will check anyone blue link in website

Yes.

First lesson - don't call them "air hostesses" if you want to be one! They prefer to be known as cabin crew these days!

Your qualification would certainly help, though cabin crew selection is extremely competitive and qualifications are just a small part.

Your best entry into the travel business is to try and get a job with a High Street ABTA agent.

I am trying to plan my honeymoon, please help! We are planning a 18 days trip.

depends when you are planning the trip, maby if you could get cheap flights from Spain to london with webstie such as easyjet.co.uk or jet2.co.uk ryanair.co.uk, and zoomairlines.com theses are the good websites that i use

Have you considered Euro-Rail? You can go by train from Spain to France to Monaco, and fly to London. Must you travel in that order? It would be more economical to fly to Monaco (Monte Carlo), travel by train (using Euro-Rail tickets) travel to France, then Spain. Fly or take a ferry to London (actually to the nearest ocean port ), then travel by train to London. Do not forget the Chunnel between France and England. Euro-Rail tickets must be purchased in the states. I do not remember the cost of train tickets. You can buy a block of tickets for a certain starting date perhaps two weeks. The Euror-Rail ticket does not work in England.

Hi try booking with South African Airways.

http://ww2.flysaa.com/

The do service the Los Angeles-Lusake route. South African Airways is one of the best airlines in Africa.

You may also wish to compare with Ethiopian Airlines which is equally a good airline though in USA they only have Washington as their destination

Someone told me that I will need a travel sellers ID? Is it true? Do I get this on my own or if I'm going thru company that will provide me with the tools for a travel agency, is it still needed? How much does it cost?

You need a business license. http://homebizseo.com/50states/Florida.html You should also talk to SCORE and The Small Business Development Center for free advice.

Hi Curioust...,

If you’re serious about being your own boss, making an honest income commensurate with the effort you put forth. I have been working with a company for a while and have had great results. If you are interested contact me at allican57

This job can be done from just about anywhere, over the Internet, over the phone, or in person. F/T, P/T, Free Training, Low Investment, No Inventory

I have a website that’s just set-up for something just like that!

Let’s assume you know someone that’s going on a trip soon and you ask them to go to your website and click on the travel icon, which will link them to the TRAVELOCITY website that is the same price to everyone, everywhere. Through a partnership with TRAVELOCITY you will receive a 4% commission. This happens automatically with no paperwork on your part, whether they are a member or not. All you need to do is sit back and wait for a check from which shows up like clock-work in 30 days.

Thanks,

Wheels

You can start your own Travel Agency, just like Expedia, travelocity, orbitz, etc.... We use the same search engines as all of these companies do, the only difference is you make the money instead of those guys. You make 60-70% of commissions on all travel done through your site. If you want more info, e-mail me at brandon@jbtravelteam.com

Our company will be your support, you can also receive your credentials, all for under $500.00.

Pamplona's running of the bulls travel tips?

Posted by Apichai Chomsing | 2:03 PM | 1 comments »

Hi -

I was wondering if anyone can share some tips (travel, budgeting and running) for participation in Pamplona's annual running of the bulls. I really want to participate this year.

Thanks.

I second what Dart Swinger said. Those bulls are pretty fast for such big buggers.

As for budgeting, that's pretty difficult. My best recommendation is to find out how much everything should cost, then add another 25 - 50%.

In my youth, a lot of people used to just camp out on park benches. Don't know if the police will come and shoo you away.

There are plenty of inexpensive hostales and pensiones in any town in Spain, although what that means is no longer exactly "cheap". And you want to book ahead, as this is when everyone in the city makes their money for the year. Expect to pay higher prices for rooms for the Feria. I just checked one place (not far from the bull ring) and the same room which is 60 - 70 € any other time of the year is 250 + for high season. I would expect the Feria to be High Season.

Start at Si Spain website: Directorate General for Cultural Affairs at the Spanish Foreign Ministry.

http://www.sispain.org/english/index.html this is a good resource and starting point for any part of Spain.

I found a couple of other places to find Hostales:

http://destinia.com/hotels/hoteles-en-pamplona/navarra/espana/europa/2014/es

(was under cheap hotels - pamplona)

http://www.booking.com/city/es/pamplona.html?aid=301020;label=es|pamplona|lodging-pamplona|8860

(under hotels - Pamplona)

This is a great one, I'm sure. I got a lot of information from Madrid Man. He and his cohorts really know their stuff.

http://www.madridman.com/pamplona/hostalespamplona.html

Start with those, and do more searches. Search Pamplona, some of the lodging sites will ask for you to pick dates to get a quote. Half the fun is in the searching.

Also: expect that food and drink might be higher that week, as well. For living on a budget, don´t plan to eat whole dinners, have tapas and bocadillos. Don´t buy bottled water every time you sit down. In most parts of Spain, tap water is not only fine, it tastes great (however, don´t even bother in Barcelona, it tastes like....chemicals, I guess, sulphur, mostly). So you can just buy a bottle of water at the grocery store and fill it wherever you are when you run out. Some places even have fridges (although not so much in the hostales), so you can chill it overnight.

Sue had some great advice on lodging etc. If you haven't already booked a place to sleep, then you should do that NOW (or yesterday). Many places are booked 2 yrs in advance. In fact, some people even rent out their BALCONIES just to watch the running!! There is also bussing from other towns, so don't rule out the idea that you might have to book a hostal in a neighboring town and bus in each day.

As far as the actually running, my advice is to read ahead as much as you can about bull behavior. A fighting bull is not a standard cow and they behavior differently. There are many books that could give you some pointers: Running with the Bulls (Gray); Death and the Sun (Lewine); La Fiesta Brava (Conrad) are a few that come to mind. Hemingway also wrote several books with a bullfight theme, and he was a "regular" in Pamplona. Suerte, chico!

Be sure to run faster than the bulls. Try not to get killed.

I am a Chinese at Atlanta. I want to travel around US, Are their any travel agency for chinese people? Thanks

Ireland Honeymoon Travel Tips?

Posted by Apichai Chomsing | 9:04 PM | 0 comments »

I'm trying to plan my upcoming honeymoon to Ireland in late Sept/Early Oct 2009 from the US (California to be exact). Can anyone give me tips on how to find cheap airfare and places we should see while we are there?

Dundalk is the honeymoon capital of Ireland.

They do tours of celebrity houses. You can see The Corrs house while you're there.

I am going to give you the only piece of advice that was given to me for finding cheap travel deals, and it works to this day... Compare as many travel websites as you can as often as you can. Since you have a few months, start searching today and search the flights every week until the month before you are going. If anything is unusually cheaper, book it on that date. I would definitely recommend checking out BookMe. You can compare ALL the reputable travel sites from one location, and save tons of money. Good luck!

As I am from N. Ireland I would suggest something out of the ordinary plus get to see and experience the beauty that is N. Ireland.

For that "different" experience - try here - you can book a double bath !!

http://www.soakseaweedbaths.co.uk/

general information on N. Ireland

http://www.discovernorthernireland.com/

AND

remember your Dollar goes a lot further against Sterling (N.Ireland) than the Euro (Republic of Ireland).

site for Republic of Ireland

http://www.discoverireland.com/gb/

For flights within Europe I use this as a guide.

http://www.skyscanner.net/

try www.aerlingus.com.. they have a sale on at the moment for flights to the US, so I presume they should have some from the US too...but I don't know if they go to California.

For trips and deals try discover Ireland, link below

If you land in Shannon spend a few days in Clare, and Galway, before heading off. Cork and Kerry are beautiful, but dont miss out on Dublin and Belfast too.

You're used to dry heat - make sure you bring warm clothes and a scarf and dress in layers. Ireland is damper than you're used to, and colder.

Go to www.discoverireland.ie to get an idea, and be prepared to stay in one area rather than haring all over the country - it may be small, but it's impossible to get around very fast unless you have a helicopter.

Does anyone know of a decent company to get travel insurance with? I am going to Australia for a year on a working holiday visa. Any idea of what I should look out for and how much I could expect to pay?

i came over here to Australia (and stayed) with a working holiday visa but, since im italian, Italy & australia have some sort of deal that i get the so called Medicare for free for 6 months. You should check that out too.

Search for it on web: Annual Single Trip Travel Insurance.

Make sure you are covered if you move address's etc, ensure all baggage is covered and just incase check out the excluded activities alot of companies will not cover you for personal injury if you are doing bar work so just double check it.

you will need to organise insurance in your own country before you leave

We will be traveling to Mendoza for a 1 week visit. Any tips regarding local travel, places to see, etc.

Head to nearby Cerro Aconcagua, it is the highest mountain in the Americas.

Assuming you are planning your trip to Mendoza because of it being the wine producing region of Argentina, you will be greatly appreciative of this location. It is much like the Napa Valley in California as you will see from the vineyards and how they are laid out. Many small wineries dot the countryside where you can stop and enjoy a selection of their vintners. Also, you can enjoy a sumptous lunch at some wineries if you plan ahead. Many excursions are available at reasonable prices. Argentina is becoming a world leader in production of excellent wines and you will be pleasantly surprised at their reasonable prices. I am from the Napa Valley and spend considerable time in Mendoza because it reminds me of home.

oh nice i used to live there.

its good. have fun!

visit as much as you can

How do I go about creating my own Travel Agency? I'm going to have a BS in Management, and would like to set up one, but not sure how.

You'll definitely need a good business plan. I recommend joining a professional association for travel agents and seeking out a mentor to help you "learn the ropes." Then, look up a professional writer to help you design a strong business plan.

I am getting married at the end of this coming September. My fiance and I would like to take a 2 week honeymoon (one week in Paris and one week in Rome). Would it be cheaper for us to book the trip ourseles, or go through a travel agent?

If you find a good travel agent that specializes in these places they should not be anymore expensive than a web shop or doing it yourself. Having a valued travel agent behind your travel plans is a GREAT piece of mind. They will know the best areas to stay, what you shouldn't miss, etc. I can say that as in all things, not all travel agents are the same. Find one you feel comortable with and confident in their expertise. remember they do this everyday. This is your honeymoon, focus on that, don't stress on travel plans.

50/50.

Best Power Search engine is www.EnglishRose.WorldVentures.com

One click searches over 200 travel websites.

Check it out for ideas.

Talk to the travel agents for advice. Make notes. Then go home, get on the internet and set your own travel arrangements. YOU can do everything they can do. They just have more experience than you. If you want a programed travel, where you follow the crowd, then they can help. You will enjoy it more by going to a hotel and loking at what's available and choosing your own travels. Don't get trapped into a package. some pacages are good; but allow yourselves time to do what YOU want to do. One or two days should be spent just relaxing and following your feet. Go to the places the tourists don't go. Ask the locals what they like. Been to many places and have found that it is much more fun and enjoyable to just hang loose and go. Make sure you have extra camera batteries before you go.

Self-booking is ALWAYS cheaper than using a travel agent. They have surcharges and get paid by companies to sell their services to you, so you're not always getting the best service or the best price.

For those destinations a travel agent, they can get you net prices from consolidators for you air, which is sold to you with a min. mark up, but it's better then a published fare which you will pay for online, they also have better access too hotels and any tours you may want to do.

Good luck, and congrats!

I'd check both - travel agents will have access to better discounted fares, but add their commission on top, so it really depends on how much commission they add.

You avoid the commission by self booking and may also find special offers.

A scrap book! hope this helps

Go and get them their own journal, and when you go someplace let them pick up one pamplet from there so they can put it in the book along with their thoughts of the place.

Bring a video camera with you over the vacation.

have them write in a journal....thats what they teach us in our outdoor education classes for teaching at my state college

There are many ways to record their holiday vacation.

Scrap books are really good and hands on.

Try getting them 35 mm film cameras, or get kid friendly digital cameras.

Have them write journal entries daily, in a seperate notebook, labelled Vacation.

Or try making them draw pictures.

Handy cam.

When I traveled cross America, I kept on of those composition books. Any picture I took I would record in it and describe what it was and why I took it. Also kept other info about what I liked or disliked about a place.

Can you give me the travel tips about China?

Hi there , i will be in Honkhong Agust 25 please tell me best travel tips and do you know any cheapest travel agency in Beijing or honkhong please tell me :)

I have never been to Hongkong. But I am familiar with Beijing.

Try to avoid travel agency, just buy air tickets and book hotels on your own. Remember the important sightseeings, go to destinations by subway or taxi.

Most educated young people can speak some English. You should speak english slowly and simply.

this is a great Q thats for posting ! http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20060811012906AAWa4cu&kid=P6JGBWD9DTDub.C9905X&s=comm&date=2007-03-24+09%3A20%3A02&.crumb=

Well if you are going to Hong Kong dont forget to go the the Disney Park its one of the best attractions... and if you are planning to go to China from there most of the places like Ganzau etc does not require visa if traveling from Hong Kong.... Macau which is near Hong Kong is best if you are interested in gambling... With regards to travel agents just shop around at Kawloon for the best deal

please visit http://www.calltouristlink.net

1st you have to apply for Visa to go to China, it's quite easy and fast to get it, or you can ask your travel agency to apply it for you. A lot of travel agencies in Hong Kong offer cheap tour package and vary destinations (Beijing, Shanghai, shenzen etc). I don't know which one is the cheapest one but you can search on internet for cheap travel agencies in Hong Kong.

Famous, beautiful and full of Chinese presence places are Hangzhou and Suzhou. I have never been there before. But since I was a kid, I was hearing about them. There's a axiom saying Up there goes Heaven, down goes Suzhou and Hangzhou.

I don't know what exactly you are looking for.

Get the People's Daily and get all the info you need from there.

At the left side there are tips for China

http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/

Save money -- If you are up for adventures Go West. go to Chengdu, Kunming, or Xi'an. go to Lanzhou and Xining -- Gansu Province and Xinghai are great and cheap. Gan Bei.

How is the Travel Agency Business these days?

Posted by Apichai Chomsing | 8:05 AM | 0 comments »

How is the travel agency business these days? I have a interview with a travel agency for office work/ ticketing... However, how is the business these days? Do people buy tickets online mostly? or do most people go to direct travel agency to buy their tickets? If the direct travel agency's business is not going too well, I dont know if I should interview because chance of layoff..

I worked at a travel agency from Feb '07 - May '08 and things were really busy at first...we were slammed during the summer of '07. But this past year things slowed down A LOT. I was making nothing in commission anymore and I decided it was time to move on.

It's a good thing I did because they ended up closing down my store (along with about 40 other branches in the US) about a month and a half after I left.

Travel agencies are definitely hurting these days and the internet will eventually take over.

You could take the job just to get experience and some discounts on travel, but dont expect a lot of pay.

Unfortunately, there is a risk of layoff in any business. That's the US in the 21st century.

It depends on the type of agency and its business mix. Is the interview with a small, local agency or with a large company that relies primarily on corporate customers?

Contrary to what some people on this website will tell you, everyone does NOT use the Internet. Yes, it is quite popular and lots of people do use it. However, there are also many people who don't like using their credit cards on the Internet. Some people simply don't want to put in the time and work to book their own trips. They would rather have someone else do it for them. Also, the Internet works best for simple trips. It's not the best place to book tours or complex itineraries.

That being said, it's a very tough business for small agencies that specialize in leisure travel. Airlines no longer pay commissions and the Internet is faster and easier for simple itineraries.

You might want to ask the interviewer about their business mix (but don't admit why you want to know - you're just interested in the type of clientele and the type of work that you might be doing) . They may be doing okay if they are located in an affluent area and sell a lot of cruises and high-end tours. They might also be okay if they have a good base of corporate clients or, better yet, specialize in corporate clients. Corporate travel is not immune to recession, but it's less affected than vacation travel. And, corporations are less likely to use the Internet because of the loss of control over costs.

I wouldn't be in any hurry to work for an agency that is dependent on low-end vacation travelers. There is no money in that.

As another answer has noted, the pay is not great for entry-level positions. Benefits might also be sparse unless you get in with a larger company. Travel discounts are largely a joke. I stopped using airline discounts years ago and started buying nonrefundable tickets. They were cheaper and easier to get.

Good luck!

You might have heard some of the big giants in online travel agencies like expedia, kayak, cheapoair......... people don't go any where, they directly come to these sites and buy airline tickets.

Not up north (we will be coming from the north) and still in the US

Hi from France !

If you want to go far, try French Atlantic coast ( south) called : '' Pays Basque '', Biarritz city is very romantic for honeymoon .....Check out :

http://www.biarritz.fr

Have a nice sunday and safe journey,

Cat.

the pumpkin patch! lol! it seems good to me! have some pumpkin pie!

Try a cruise. I cruised on October a few years ago and Had the best weather. At least on a ship you can move away from hurricanes. On land ex. Dominican Republic or Mexico you are stuck. Have a great time.

The sea beach of Coxesbazar of Bangladesh. Or the the village of Chondraboti (an ancient women poet) near river Norsunda.

Eureka Springs, Arkansas, is a quaint Victorian town that is a well known honeymoon haven. The leaves are gorgeous at the end of October. I was just there for two weeks this fall. Stay at the Sycamore Cottage which is very private and facing the woods or the New Orleans Hotel downtown.

Key West Fl. or Hawaii

The Great Smoky Mountains in Gatlinburg Tennessee is a good honeymoon destination anytime of year. You can get a chalet or cabin in the mountains with a fireplace and a jacuzzi. It's awesome! http://www.mountainchalets.com/default.aspx

Try Vegas. It is nice there. And whatever you do try to stay out of the Caribbean it is Hurricane Season.

Im 19 and my boyfriend and I don't have allot of money (a couple of hundred pounds at most). We need to get away from everyone and everything for a few days where its sunny (we both live in the UK). Was thinking of getting a cheap flight to Spain or America. I want to go somewhere easy going as it'll be our first holiday together abroad with out parents! What other things will I need to know?

Ok, I have been in your situation and it is possible. I would recommend, for your money that you stay inside Europe - any further and the flights will be too much. when do you want to go?

If you are planning your holidays I can recommend you this web: http://www.spain.info/UK/TourSpain
