Anyone have any last minute travel tips on going to Australia?

I'm off in two weeks and am having a last minute worry about what to take with me. I'm doing some conservation work whilst i'm out there and also planning to go on a three day trek.

Anyone have any tips on what to take?

Bring condoms! Australians love Americans.

It depends where in Australia you are going. If your three day trek is in the NSW or Victorian mountains, you will need cold weather gear and be prepared for snow. If it is in the tropics, you will need a good hat and sunblock. Australia is a big place, bigger than the USA (without Alaska), and has a large range of climates.

My mother once gave me some very sensible advice when I was going through this exercise of last minute worrying - "It's a civilised place. If you forgot it you can buy it."

It makes travelling a little less worrying if you remember that.

Waterless cleansing wipes (for the face/body), sunblock, insect repellent, ziploc bags, bandanas (several), sunglasses, a good ventilated sun hat, travel underwear (hand wash/quick-dry), lip balm with sun protection, blister plasters, and tweezers.

Many visitors from the US and Europe arrive in June/July and are surprised to discover that it is both cold and wet here in the southern half of Australia at that time of year. Make sure you have some warm clothing, and something waterproof for your trekking, and she'll be apples.

We do have stores here, so you will be able to buy anything that you forget. Don't stress too much about what you pack, and enjoy your visit.

It is very important to check customs regulation in Australia. They are quite strict!

What should I do about a travel agency that didn't book a hotel?

About a month ago I called a travel agency to book hotel and airline tickets. I received a confirmation for the airline but not the hotel. After I called her the travel agent said she would take care of it we do have reservations. I've been calling her for over a week and she is not returning my calls. I called the hotel and they are all booked with no reservations under my name. What rights do I have.? What is my next step?

Did they charge your credit card for both or just the airfare? If they airfare part is ok, either cancel the whole thing and dispute the credit card charge, or keep the airfare part and book the rest yourself. Obviously if that hotel is booked you need to find another one ASAP, probably on your own... then go to the BBB website and file a complaint there. Main thing is to get your trip booked. Travel companies are known for being idiots so do what you have to do. But really there's no reason to use travel agencies anymore.

Idea where to travel for honeymoon?

We are trying to plan our honeymoon for this July. We live in Washington state, and really can't afford airfare to Mexico or we would be on our way, so we are thinking of going to Canada. We can drive there, and wouldn't have to pay for the pass ports. Does anyone know any great places in Canada to stay on the west coast side? A city or specific hotel would be great! Thanks for your help!

Do you want to go to Canada or just to B.C. -- it seems from your question it is the latter because driving to Alberta and beyond might strain the budget and driving time. But you already have in Washington State a beautiful seacoast and the breathtaking Cascades. But a few suggestions:

Victoria is a beautiful little city with nothing quite comparable to it in Washington State (or elsewhere in North America, for that matter). Vancouver is vibrant and thriving and can be compared in certain ways with Seattle (Vancouver's Gastown district and Seattle's Pioneer Square are practically interchangable) but is distinctive by cultural effects of its much greater Asian communities (south Asian as well as oriental Asian) as well as its libertarianism (it is almost impossible to get to Vancouver's downtown peninsula without traveling though at least part of its notorious near east side). The long finger lakes regions in B.C.'s Rocky Mountain valleys (Okanagan, Kootenay and Duncan) have nothing comparable in Washington State.

If you do choose to honeymoon in B.C. by all means enjoy the wines! B.C.s white wines are generally better than Washington's (some - such as Okanagan pinot gris - are among the best in the world); B.C's red wines are often not quite as good as Washington's best but many come close.

Take the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry and/or BC ferry.

It's like a less expensive less snooty cruise. You can take your car (If you like). You can get off at any port (and stay at a quaint B&B) then pick up the next ferry passing through. You can get a little birth with bed and washroom. You don't need a passport when travelling by land or sea. The scenery and wildlife are amazing. There are park rangers on board who give interesting lectures throughout the journey. You can design your own trip. You can get to little towns that the big cruise ships can't get to.

The Grand Canyon...

I went there with my husband on our honeymoon. We stayed in Kingman Arizona on historic Route 66, in a boutique hotel (the Brunswick). Then we went to the Grand Canyon the next day. We went to the west rim where they have just finished building the sky bridge on the Hualapai Reservation but you could also go to the North or South Rim. But the west rim is just as nice, maybe not so big.

Also the west rim is within driving distance to Las Vegas (where we got married). There is a lot to do in and around that area, aside from gambling. Best of luck and congratulations.

Vancouver's nice. It's been a while since I was there, so I'm not sure on hotels. If there's a Hilton or similar, at least you'd be familiar with the level of comfort to expect.

Why do some holiday travel insurance companys not insure you when travelling to cuba?

Usually if you're booking to go to Cuba, they will offer an insurance policy to go along with your trip to Cuba.

Even if you are booking through the US (given that you have a travel license for Cuba), travel companies should offer insurance.

Which country are you booking from?

Certainly isn't the Canadian companies, by the way the Transat rep at Rio Luna advised us last year that there is a reciprocal arrangement betwen Canada and Cuba should a Canadian become ill in Cuba.

No idea, never had any problem getting insurance when I've been to Cuba, been 3 times and was there at Easter but got insurance with no problems.

As a US citizen it is illegal for us to visit Cuba, so an insurance company will not insure you.

They are probably USA owned.

Have you considered Euro-Rail? You can go by train from Spain to France to Monaco, and fly to London. Must you travel in that order? It would be more economical to fly to Monaco (Monte Carlo), travel by train (using Euro-Rail tickets) travel to France, then Spain. Fly or take a ferry to London (actually to the nearest ocean port ), then travel by train to London. Do not forget the Chunnel between France and England. Euro-Rail tickets must be purchased in the states. I do not remember the cost of train tickets. You can buy a block of tickets for a certain starting date perhaps two weeks. The Euror-Rail ticket does not work in England.

I second what Dart Swinger said. Those bulls are pretty fast for such big buggers.

As for budgeting, that's pretty difficult. My best recommendation is to find out how much everything should cost, then add another 25 - 50%.

In my youth, a lot of people used to just camp out on park benches. Don't know if the police will come and shoo you away.

There are plenty of inexpensive hostales and pensiones in any town in Spain, although what that means is no longer exactly "cheap". And you want to book ahead, as this is when everyone in the city makes their money for the year. Expect to pay higher prices for rooms for the Feria. I just checked one place (not far from the bull ring) and the same room which is 60 - 70 â‚¬ any other time of the year is 250 + for high season. I would expect the Feria to be High Season.

Start with those, and do more searches. Search Pamplona, some of the lodging sites will ask for you to pick dates to get a quote. Half the fun is in the searching.

Also: expect that food and drink might be higher that week, as well. For living on a budget, donÂ´t plan to eat whole dinners, have tapas and bocadillos. DonÂ´t buy bottled water every time you sit down. In most parts of Spain, tap water is not only fine, it tastes great (however, donÂ´t even bother in Barcelona, it tastes like....chemicals, I guess, sulphur, mostly). So you can just buy a bottle of water at the grocery store and fill it wherever you are when you run out. Some places even have fridges (although not so much in the hostales), so you can chill it overnight.

Sue had some great advice on lodging etc. If you haven't already booked a place to sleep, then you should do that NOW (or yesterday). Many places are booked 2 yrs in advance. In fact, some people even rent out their BALCONIES just to watch the running!! There is also bussing from other towns, so don't rule out the idea that you might have to book a hostal in a neighboring town and bus in each day.

As far as the actually running, my advice is to read ahead as much as you can about bull behavior. A fighting bull is not a standard cow and they behavior differently. There are many books that could give you some pointers: Running with the Bulls (Gray); Death and the Sun (Lewine); La Fiesta Brava (Conrad) are a few that come to mind. Hemingway also wrote several books with a bullfight theme, and he was a "regular" in Pamplona. Suerte, chico!

Be sure to run faster than the bulls. Try not to get killed.

You're used to dry heat - make sure you bring warm clothes and a scarf and dress in layers. Ireland is damper than you're used to, and colder.

We will be traveling to Mendoza for a 1 week visit. Any tips regarding local travel, places to see, etc.

Head to nearby Cerro Aconcagua, it is the highest mountain in the Americas.

Assuming you are planning your trip to Mendoza because of it being the wine producing region of Argentina, you will be greatly appreciative of this location. It is much like the Napa Valley in California as you will see from the vineyards and how they are laid out. Many small wineries dot the countryside where you can stop and enjoy a selection of their vintners. Also, you can enjoy a sumptous lunch at some wineries if you plan ahead. Many excursions are available at reasonable prices. Argentina is becoming a world leader in production of excellent wines and you will be pleasantly surprised at their reasonable prices. I am from the Napa Valley and spend considerable time in Mendoza because it reminds me of home.

If you find a good travel agent that specializes in these places they should not be anymore expensive than a web shop or doing it yourself. Having a valued travel agent behind your travel plans is a GREAT piece of mind. They will know the best areas to stay, what you shouldn't miss, etc. I can say that as in all things, not all travel agents are the same. Find one you feel comortable with and confident in their expertise. remember they do this everyday. This is your honeymoon, focus on that, don't stress on travel plans.

Talk to the travel agents for advice. Make notes. Then go home, get on the internet and set your own travel arrangements. YOU can do everything they can do. They just have more experience than you. If you want a programed travel, where you follow the crowd, then they can help. You will enjoy it more by going to a hotel and loking at what's available and choosing your own travels. Don't get trapped into a package. some pacages are good; but allow yourselves time to do what YOU want to do. One or two days should be spent just relaxing and following your feet. Go to the places the tourists don't go. Ask the locals what they like. Been to many places and have found that it is much more fun and enjoyable to just hang loose and go. Make sure you have extra camera batteries before you go.

Self-booking is ALWAYS cheaper than using a travel agent. They have surcharges and get paid by companies to sell their services to you, so you're not always getting the best service or the best price.

For those destinations a travel agent, they can get you net prices from consolidators for you air, which is sold to you with a min. mark up, but it's better then a published fare which you will pay for online, they also have better access too hotels and any tours you may want to do.

Scrap books are really good and hands on.

Try getting them 35 mm film cameras, or get kid friendly digital cameras.

Have them write journal entries daily, in a seperate notebook, labelled Vacation.

Or try making them draw pictures.

When I traveled cross America, I kept on of those composition books. Any picture I took I would record in it and describe what it was and why I took it. Also kept other info about what I liked or disliked about a place.

A lot of travel agencies in Hong Kong offer cheap tour package and vary destinations (Beijing, Shanghai, shenzen etc). How is the travel agency business these days? I have a interview with a travel agency for office work/ ticketing... However, how is the business these days? Do people buy tickets online mostly? or do most people go to direct travel agency to buy their tickets? If the direct travel agency's business is not going too well, I dont know if I should interview because chance of layoff..

I worked at a travel agency from Feb '07 - May '08 and things were really busy at first...we were slammed during the summer of '07. But this past year things slowed down A LOT. I was making nothing in commission anymore and I decided it was time to move on.

It's a good thing I did because they ended up closing down my store (along with about 40 other branches in the US) about a month and a half after I left.

Travel agencies are definitely hurting these days and the internet will eventually take over.

You could take the job just to get experience and some discounts on travel, but dont expect a lot of pay.

Unfortunately, there is a risk of layoff in any business. That's the US in the 21st century.

They would rather have someone else do it for them. Also, the Internet works best for simple trips. It's not the best place to book tours or complex itineraries.

That being said, it's a very tough business for small agencies that specialize in leisure travel. Airlines no longer pay commissions and the Internet is faster and easier for simple itineraries.

You might want to ask the interviewer about their business mix (but don't admit why you want to know - you're just interested in the type of clientele and the type of work that you might be doing) . They may be doing okay if they are located in an affluent area and sell a lot of cruises and high-end tours. They might also be okay if they have a good base of corporate clients or, better yet, specialize in corporate clients. Corporate travel is not immune to recession, but it's less affected than vacation travel. And, corporations are less likely to use the Internet because of the loss of control over costs.

I wouldn't be in any hurry to work for an agency that is dependent on low-end vacation travelers. There is no money in that.

As another answer has noted, the pay is not great for entry-level positions. Benefits might also be sparse unless you get in with a larger company. Travel discounts are largely a joke. I stopped using airline discounts years ago and started buying nonrefundable tickets. They were cheaper and easier to get.

Try a cruise. I cruised on October a few years ago and Had the best weather. At least on a ship you can move away from hurricanes. On land ex. Dominican Republic or Mexico you are stuck. Have a great time.

Hi, I am Egyptian and I also went to the far east during my honey moon. Malaysia is amazing so go for it, but I would advise you to select another destination instead of Singapore. It is a big city, very expensive and not much to do nor see. Not very romantic too.

i went on Singapore airlines on my honey moon, not the cheapest but that's all i know, Malysia is great i was in Langkawi in a Hotel named The Lanaii. much cheaper than 150$, i cant remember how much now.

and fozio, i was in Singapore and i wonder why you didn't like it much really because it is marvellous and has many things to do in there. there is the zoo (which is terrific) and the sentosa island shows and cable car. yes it is very expensive, but it won't be that costy if you don't do shopping you know!

For travelling around, buy an Oyster card it's cheaper than paying single fares on London transport,if u pay by cash they charge double.

I went to London last year and went to a few pretty cool places. The London Dungeon is a fun place. It is London's hunted house but it is nothing like a haunted house in the US. It isn't very scary but it is very interesting because it is basically a walkthrough of all the lives of the masmurderers back in the old days. It has a lot of history. The Tower of London is a must. It is huge castle grounds that have many old time buildings still in tact. It is great for a walker lover because there are so many places to walk to and explore. I thought it was also really neat because it is still set up like the old days. There is also a huge strip of shopping stores and malls that I cannot remember the name of but it is downtown and just ask someone once you get there because everyone knows where they are. Also some words of advice...you are going to have to take the subway a lot to get to places and it is a good idea to keep your money on the inside pocket of a jacket or something because people will "bump" you on the tramway and steal your money. They love the tourists lol But I had a wonderful time and there is definatley a lot to do and a lot of walking around envolved. Just ask someone Have a good time

Glad you like to walk because there is plenty to walk around to. Buckingham palace, london bridge, its a long strip and town centers with lots of shopping. If you can catch the changing of the guards, thats quite interesting. Nice little military show.

OH but remember to watch your pockets. Biggest crime is pick pockets. I carry all my stuff in a back pack with the zippers locked and both straps on my shoulders.

It's not the agency that sets the fare, it's the airlines. You can do some searches on places like tripadvisor.com that will search mutiple websites for fares.

If you search for a departure at least 14 days away, you can get a much better fare.However, it will be very close.

What place would you love to go for a honeymoon or where have you been? It could be anywhere.

Aruba. It is constantly 85 degrees but not hot because of the constant breeze. It NEVER rains (a plus on a honeymoon) and it's out of the hurricane area so no worries of hurricanes striking during one of the most important times of your life.

It's very safe. I have vacationed solo there and would do so again. It was the best vacation with the beach, sand, constant great weather, friendly islanders and beautiful natural scenery.

If you're into it you can even rent a car or a jeep. If you get a jeep you can go to all the places like the caverns etc and renting a vehicle is cheaper in Aruba then in the USA!

Ireland. The scenery is beautiful. The people are friendly. The culture is fascinating. You'd have great memories.

We're going to France and Switzerland, which I'm uber-excited about, but I would also like to go to Brazil. Maybe that will be our second honeymoon!

Belize IT! There is snorkeling, scuba diving, and sight seeing. Plus its a very romantic place to be!

CABO SAN LUCAS!!! LOL I'm sorry but we just fell in love with that place. Me and my hubby got married last april and went to cabo san lucas for a week. It was one of the best times i've had. Most travel agents do charge some sort of a Cxl fee.. This is usually sat up by the TA to cover the cost of the hours spent on makeing the plans and such since they are going to be losing the commission off of the completed trip. Usually this amount is no where near what they would have made if you would have completed your trip..But it usually is a large amount of money.. (But not all TA charges a fee, I never have)

yes, it's right because once they're booked and ticketed, any changes will cost them service fees. it's an airline policy that travel agents need to be aware of. because what happened there is the once ticketed, the seat is mark as sold. and other passengers cannot purchase any ticket once the flight is sold out.

I'm leaving the US for the first time, going to Mexico (Mazatlan) for a week. Can anyone give me any tips or hints about travelling internationally in general and travelling to Mexico or Mazatlan specifically?

Learn to say "please" and "thank you" in Spanish.

Make a copy of your passport and keep it in a safe place, separate from your actual passport.

Don't drink the water.

Read as much as you can about the place before you go.

Don't do illegal things -- you will go to jail in Mexico and will not get out just because you're an American.

Consider buying travel insurance in case your trip is canceled and evacuation insurance in case you get hurt.

Practice safe sex.

Mazatlan has a thriving drug traffic. Don't get into anything shady.

Wear sun screen.

Have fun!

I've been to Mazatland and it's quite nice. Don't drink the water, or ice unless it's in a touristy place. Get some shots for certain diseases, be prepared to bargain, don't wear expensive stuff or flaunt it off.

Learn some spanish. Don't drink the water. Be careful of people trying to sell you bottled water. Make sure the bottle is sealed all of the way. Don't bring that much cash on you. There are pick pockets. Take lots of pictures and have fun.

I am not trying to be fun, but watch what you eat beacuase you can easily get tapeworms or something.

I have been travelling to Mazatlan for the past 25 years and have no trouble findng safe places to eat, inlcuding places where mainly locals eat. Restaurants that are catering to tourists will not try and make you sick by serving non-purified water. We eat salads, iced drinks - no problema man!

If you are really concerned there is an oral vaccine "Dukulor" which must be taken one week apart, starting 2 weeks before travel date. Requires a prescription from your doctor,

Taking buses around town is easy and cheap. If you take taxis, settle on the price before getting in. Prices in town are higher when a cruise ship is docked. La Clif (The Cliff) at the southern end of town is a beautiful, memorable restaurant, perfect to go to while on your honeymoon. It's on a cliff overlooking the ocean. Perfect at sunset. You'll need to make reservations. The brunch (I think Sundays?) at the Sheraton Bouganvillas is awesome! Have a wonderful honeymoon and enjoy Puerto Vallarta!

Puerto Vallarta is a beautiful place and most of the hotels and restaurants have purified drinking water. I would ask first. There is an excellent restaurant that the locals go to that is on top of a mountain that has great food and a fabulous view, called Aye Carumba. Ask your hotel or any taxi driver. We stayed in Nuevo Vallarta when we went which is not far, the newer area. You may want to try one of the restaurants over there. They have a couple outside restaurants that are real good. Have a wonderful time and congratulations.

Watch out for those little roadside eating shacks unless you see many locals also eating there. Don't brush your teeth with the local water too. Pass on the ice in the drinks unless it's well water. 1 final warning; It always seem the Mexico Sun Gods prey victims on light color skins. US dollars are widely accepted everywhere in PV but pesos are nice for tips, bargaining, and general use as well.

You can get great deals online, but sometimes travel agents just know where to go. Also, does it cost extra to use a travel agent?

Unless you already have an idea on where you want to go, what sort of facilities you want, how much you want to spend, I would go through a travel agent. The travel agent will be able to narrow down the possibilities and find the perfect spot for you.

Travel agencies are not always more expensive than online. They sometimes do have a fee, but it will be incorporated in the total package and will probably only be $50 or so. Travel agencies also have access to bulk packages that are not always available online.

Going through a travel agency will also be one less thing you need to stress yourself over while preparing for the big day. Why add more stress on yourself, when you can get someone else to do all the hardwork for you and for a price that is not that much greater than online? :)

I would get my deal online (shop around before making a purchase) after TALKING to a travel agent (you don't have to book anything right away right?) about where you'd like to go & what they suggest, and you could even post ?? on yahoo! answers to get feedback from readers on where you have in mind, etc ...

They can help get better deals due to what is commonly called 'bulk rates' in the travel industry and can guide you better about a destination and budget. IM planning to travel from melbourne to darwin through alice springs after xmas, just wondering if anyone has any tips for us including safety tips!!

For those long distances, make sure your spare tyre is checked and ready to use. Ensure you have a spare fuel can (distances between fuel stops mean a very long walk between stations) for backup. Don't forget to take water too. Remember to take regular breaks when driving. Watch out for road trains (trucks with 3 or more trailers) and be careful if you try to pass them (they can snake along the width of the road lane). Ensure your care has a mechanical checkup before you go. Take extra care when driving around dusk or dawn. This is when your are most likely to encounter Kangaroos on the road.

I would also suggest carrying extra water ~ one container specifically for use in the car, and another (kept separately) for drinking. Another good thing to have is a Cancer Council recommended hat (link below). These make a HUGE difference when sight seeing in hot regions.

It is also wise to advise someone of the route of your trip and your expected date of arrival / departure.

Having a functioning mobile phone which you can charge from the car battery (usually via the cigarette lighter) and which will work in remote areas is also essential.

If you DO have a breakdown, do not leave your car and wander away. Stay with your vehicle and wait for a passing vehicle.

Cars have been found abandoned with their former occupants dead or dying from dehydration just a few kilometres away, due to the high temperatures. If you are on the road, another vehicle will eventually come along. Spend your time organising shade, instead!

Apart from that, do try to sleep under the open sky at least one night ... it is truly amazing! Many people simply drive through the desert as if it was just a throughway to somewhere else, but it is an incredible destination on its own.

Take some time to stop, look at wildflowers, the horizon and the land around. If you stick to well travelled routes and take careful note of where you are going (wandering aimlessly is not a good idea!) you should be safe enough.

I am from Melbourne and I am just back from Alice Springs. Keep in mind it is wet season then. Some roads were flooded/impassible even last week. I would recommend a 4WD with a snorkel, a winch, a bull-bar, a satelite phone or 2 way radio, plenty of water, food, spare tyres etc. Keep an ear out for weather reports (floods/cyclones/lightening).

The best thing I did in Alice Springs was go quad-biking on a giant cattle station - stunning scenery and great fun.

Watch out for kangaroos/bulls/camels/donkeys etc. crossing the road. Don't drive onto Aboriginal lands without permission. Pack a first aid kit, sunscreen and insect repellent. Don't swim with saltwater crocs (Darwin). Have a great time!

Yes, get a really good guide book!!! Lonely Planet is good. It has all the tips you need, including what to pack, accommodation and eating recommendations, site seeing stuff, recommended tours, historical info, an excellent rating system, info on local culture, night life, basically everything you want to know... what to do about money, general tips, security, etc. And it's all from a fresh, youthful perspective.

I haven't done the trip, but have done a lot of out of the way driving. Make sure your car has airconditioning!!! Alice hit 43oC the other day. Always carry lots of water with you (for yourself and the car). A trip like that I'd be thinking more about the car's condition ... take 2 spare tires, extra oil, check your airfilter. You don't want something thats easily fixable to go wrong in the middle of nowhere in that heat! Keep your phone charged.

All of these answers are brilliant. I would just like to add, if it is financially possible, that you get a satellite phone and or GPS system. You are going into some very remote places and its better to be safe than sorry. And on a personal note a digital camera. The scenery you are going to encounter is spectacular! Have fun, stay safe.

If you need only air fare, rental cars, hotels, or a cruise, I would strongly suggest using a meta-search engine web site. There are only a few of those type web sites. These meta-search sites are unique because it will go out and check many different web sites all at once. It will then display a listing of the web sites in which it found the lowest price, and you can then click and go to that site for booking.

These are fairly new type web sites and growing in popularity. These sites are www.kayak.com and www.farechase.com.

HOWEVER...in EVERY case and in EVERY try you make when you search web sites....before booking, you should ALWAYS go to the direct web site for that airline/car rental/cruise line/hotel etc..... For example, if you use expedia.com or orbitz.com and find the best price for a Hilton hotel, before you book, be sure you FIRST go to www.hilton.com and check the rates there. Even if the rate is the same as you found on orbitz or expedia, always book it at hilton.com (or whatever brand.com site). There are so many reasons why you should always make this a rule, but way to long to explain here. The "aspect" here you should consider here is if expedia.com is selling rooms at a Hilton hotel, then someome is getting your money....but if you booked at hilton.com, then the Hilton gets your money and doesn't have to share it with expedia.com. SO....book direct at the brand.com site.

The short answer to your question is: To get the best price and to search for the largest available inventory of travel, use www.kayak.com or www.farchase.com. Once you find what you are looking for on those web sites, before you book, check out what the xbrand.com offers (such as hilton.com; hertz.com; delta.com;....etc....)

NOTE: When searching for air fares, you need to always check soutwest.com......they do not let other web sites book their flights.

family abroad etc is the best option or maybe a weekend in a hotel in another part of the country. your always gonna get prices bumped up the cheap prices are an eyeopener to get your attention then all the stealth taxes etc come in after that.

Yes you can. You need to book a package holiday. Any decent travel agent will be able to sell you a package holiday that includes at least flight and accommodation (the meals you get will depend on the board you pay you pay for).

Mexico......Cancun, Cozumel, etc. It's all inclusive including travel, meals, and booze.

Book online, Direct Holidays are good and include travel, transfers etc. If you opt for an all inclusive hol all food and drink are included too. Sometimes if you get an online quote and then go into the travel agents the price will go up as you usually get an online discount.

Sarah..if you just want somewhere hot then take a last minute package holiday to anywhere they say is available and it will be very very cheap but you may strike lucky and get a top hotel or maybe a crappy place....if your in Europe then book Ryanair flight and also an hotel on their site

I am packing for a 20-day exchange program trip to Germany. I'll be on an overnight flight and for 10 days I stay with my exchange partner and her family (she came here earlier this year) and then the next 10 days I am touring Germany and Switzerland. I plan on writing everything down so that I don't forget anything... but I was wondering if anyone had some travel tips I could use?

Flight suggestions:

Join the frequent flier program for the airline you will use. Joining is free and you can do it online.

Call the airline before your flight date if you want to request a seat. Some airlines donâ™t do advance seat selection and others charge a fee. The reservations agent will tell you if there are restrictions. Go to www.seatguru.com for info on seating arrangements in airlines. Try to sit in a window or aisle seat - NOT in a middle seat.

Call the airline the day before your flight and the morning before your flight to make sure there are no schedule changes. You can also check flight status online.

Pack almost everything in a suitcase that you will give to the airline to "check". The suitcase has to weigh 50 pounds or less.

All liquids & gels in containers over 3 ounces and anything that might even LOOK like a weapon (nail file, scissors, etc.) should go in your checked bag. Go to www.tsa.gov for more info on prohibited items.

Mark or tag all checked luggage with something that makes them more distinct. An example would be to attach a strip of colored tape to each side of the bag. It reduces the chance someone might pick up your bag by mistake at baggage claim (there are millions of black suitcases). Also clearly tag ALL bags >>> inside and outside

The closest that comes to this is "Bill Me Later" which are taking on credit cards as an alternative payment form. Many airlines are already offering it when you book online--such as Continental, JetBlue, USAir, and AirTran. I'm sorry to rain on your parade, but it's a very tough business.

How much do you know about travel agencies as opposed to small businesses in general? Travel agencies are a somewhat different animal. Unlike most businesses, you don't set the prices for all products. The suppliers frequently set them and you work on commission. (Airlines excepted - they set the price, pay you nothing, and then try to get your customers to buy directly from them). You don't have full control of your margins.

In order to sell airline tickets, you need to be accredited by the Airlines Reporting Corporation. There are a lot of requirements, including posting a bond and having someone on staff with prior industry experience. Take a look at the Industry Agents Handbook at www.arccorp.com. You'll need to know this very well.

A high tolerance for not making much money is also very helpful. The Internet is taking away a lot of sales from travel agents. Profits are very poor for small agencies.

I suggest that you investigate this very carefully and make sure that you really want to do it.

Unless you want to plan it yourself, a travel agent isn't a bad idea.

But on your budget, I'd want to maximize the savings and search around for great deals myself. You know, BJ's and Costco have some travel planning services. Also, AAA is a great travel planner, too.

You can save money by examining all options. Get a vacation quote from a travel agent and then do some research yourself. See if you can find better deals. If not, book with the agent. Nowadays, internet deals and hotel/air/car packages are sometimes cheaper than using travel agents.

However, many travel agencies (especially the bigger ones) offer a better fall net than individuals airlines, hotels, etc. For example, if your flight is canceled, you can call the travel agency who will put you on the next flight much quicker than the airline's customer service will.

Honestly with your budget, your best option would be to definitely get a travel agent, they're in the business of knowing how to get the most bang for your buck...and they don't cost you anything to work with them. Check your local area for a travel agent!

February is a wonderful time for Hawaii, the #1 honeymoon destination in America. The weather is at it's best and the summer crowds are gone. The rates are a bit high as the snow birds are on the Islands, however you can always find some great deals.

You can't beat a European honeymoon either. Stay a bit south as the more northern countries are cold. Most of Italy is wonderful that time of year as it Greece and Spain.

You can always go south of the Equator too, as it's summer there. Australia and NZ would work out well, as do some of the Islands of the South Seas like Fiji.

We got married February 17th of this year and went to Playa de Carmen in Mexico. It was beautiful and the weather was perfect 80-85 every day. We are 25 and never ran out of things to do. I would highly recommend the RIU Palace Playa de Carmen it is all inclusive and about 6-7 restaurants. We loved it and would go back any time! Good Luck!

I live in London with my husband and 9 month old son. We have a holiday planned for next month in Kenya. We are planning on visiting Lake Nakuru and the Maasai Mara. However, we are Americans and the travel warnings have been intense lately. Not sure what to do?

i think safety is relative in all places.for me i think kenya is safe it just matters that u dont put urself in an unsafe situation.recently we held a world social forum and there were many tourists here and they were ok.its just the same way that you would not venture into some streets in america at certain hours or by yourself.its the same in kenya.insecurity is everywhere i just dont think its all that bad here...but thats my opinion.

just think long and hard about it and call some hotels or tour guides in kenya so u can get first hand info.enjoy ur holiday wherever u decide to go.

I think it is better to wait until your son is older, otherwise you may not enjoy the trip.

Kenya is a beautiful country and should be visited.

Most of the country is at altitude and malaria is less of a problem,really serious only on the coastal strip.

However with a 9month old baby,leave this trip for a year or two

It is stressfull for the child, and you,to undertake a long haul air trip,believe me.They are susceptible to ear problems at that age.

You will be so tied up looking out for your child,I doubt you will have any recreation time

You'll be ok, but remember to do exactly as you're told. There's a "safe" strip between the airport and the central part of town that looks and feels just like any other cosmopolitan city (because that's the only part the TV crews ever see), but don't go south of Moi (street) - then you're instantly in poor africa - if you stop at lights, women with small babies throw themselves on your car until you give them money to go away - carry large quantities of local-currency small change and throw it as far AWAY from the car as you can - they'll scramble for it. If you see a hole in the road ahead, it might be a rabbit's ears that are sticking up, but more likely a donkey's. Make sure you hire a 4WD.

Carry american dollars(cash) - it's the only recognised currency.

The Lake and the Maasai, of course, are not in Nairobi - that'll just be the airport you fly into.

Check out immunisation recommendations, esp yellow fever - do it NOW, some if the innoculations "fight" with each other and have to be administered over a period of time. If you don't get them all, DO NOT eat any raw Fruit or Vegetables - you'll get VERY sick (waterborne diseases - the water they wash the food in before they serve it).

I have just been travelling around Kenya from December to January. on my travels I met a few Americans, and lots of people from all around the world.

You have to remember, if English is their second or third language, they can't tell where your from by listening, I kept getting asked where I was from, although I was speaking in English Kenyans were asking if I was German etc.

Nairobi is like any major city, and you must avoid the trouble areas after dark (River Road area). Details of this are in The Rough Guide (to Kenya). This book was our bible while we were there. I would have been lost without it.

You'll be fine as long as you don't flash any cash (keep jewellery to a minimum - if none at all) and wear plain clothes not branded stuff. Only take enough money for what you planning on doing (like your meal), this way you wont feel threatened or uncomfortable.

I absolutely loved Kenya, you'll love it too! Have a brilliant time!

PPS just noticed someone has mentioned Maleria, i know this is not a problem in Nairobi because of its altitude, but i expect you will need some anti maleria drugs for Maasai Mara and if you go to the coast.

No problem! Don't pack valuables, food or smokes in your luggage, otherwise you can buy the stuff back on the market next to the airport. Besides that Kenya is not that bad, but with anything in Africa it just needs a tiny spark to get the crowds going. Try South Africa, they appreciate your holiday money more and you can see wildlife and get value for your bucks!

It's as safe as it is anywhere. Most Kenyans don't really care where you come from as long as you don't look down on them. Lake Nakuru is beautiful, personally I found Nairobi quite intimidating but then I am not used to being in big cities, never mind big cities where men chase you down the street asking you to marry them and take them to America! I've been to Kisumu several times, it is no a standard tourist area but the people are friendly and there seems to be a lot less hassle than in larger cities like Nairobi and Mombassa. There are risks whoever you are and wherever you go. The most important thing is to develop a good relationship with the people in your host country.

I would have thought that the risk of malaria would be more of a problem, particularly with a small baby unless your family has some natural immunity. I am unsure about malaria treatment for babies but I do know that some of the adult medications have been reported to exaccerbate mental health conditions. Also have you considered the heat? I don't know when you plan to travel or which bit of the states you are from, if your baby is used to living in a hot climate you should be fine but if not then there could be a good few sleepless nights and grumpy days while s/he adjusts.

To be honest their has been political wars in Africa for many yrs and right now with Wesley Snipes hiding out there to avoid being arrested for tax evastion it is stunts like that, that put americans at risk. If it were me i would visit somewhere else like Canada, Mexico, or even the Carribean. Definately not Africa especially if you have a small baby. Do you know how bad Malaria is out there and if you aren't used to the heat do you know what a dry heat would do to you?

Normally it would be as safe as anywhere else in Africa...for Americans or any other nationality. Of course, there is always a threat of terrorism, but as we have seen in recent years, that can strike anywhere, Madrid, London...

Of course, with a 9 month old baby, you want to be particularly sensible and cautious...even tho I would go anywhere almost on my own or with my girlfriend, I have to say I'd hesitate and be very sure before taking a young child on a vacation like that ...

It's worth checking the Foreign Office website for updated travel information, and perhaps the State Dept website too...also, regarding your insurance, make sure it's comprehensive, and check the exclusions right up to the day you travel.

Also, ask on the Lonely Planet Thorntree, it's the worlds largest travellers forum, and you'll get very good and useful info from people who have been there recently or are there now.

i went on a Nile cruise in January , and did didnt have any problems with insects .

but you can take with you a mosquito repelent to be on the safe side .

in Egypt , drink bottled water and brush your teeth with it .

apply sunblock to exposed parts of your body .

wear a hat when you are in the sun .

take cotton clothes to wear in the sun when it is 25C , but have a warm jacket for the evenings which are cold , abt 7 C in Aswan and Luxor .

in Cairo , it would be 18 C am and 6 C pm.

There are many Mosquito's nearby the river, but if you bring some repellent you should be ok, a lot depends on where you are going. At that time of year it wont be bad, its mostly july & august the worst.

Other tips, drink plenty of water, & suncream, & a hat.

South Padre Island,Tx. is the only answer! They have a cool 4th of July Celebration(actually all week)Most accommodations are 50ft from the ocean. If you are 18-26, try looking at EF College Break. Look at 'the grand tour' and 'ultimate europe' they are both packages that i was looking at, but schedual wise, it didn't work out for me. It depends on what kind of "Travel" Insurance you are looking for. Sometimes when you book a trip, you can pay a little extra to have the ability to change or cancel your tickets for a full refund. This would be done with the travel agent that books your arrangements. It is a good idea if you are booking way in advance as plans can change before your trip comes around. I know some airlines also used to have insurance packages for injuries while abroad to cover the additional medical expenses involved with transferring back to your home country. Your travel agent should also be able to provide this for your or point you towards a source.

If you are talking about travel accident life insurance (like if your plane goes down or the train derails and kills everybody) don't bother. You are much more likely to get killed on your commute to work in the morning than on an airplane or train ride. You would register at city hall. You would also normally join one of the Travel Advisor trade groups so you could advertise their logo on your site.

Most people don't worry about any licenses because they don't make enuf money for them to owe any tax. The city would only get interested if you passed $30,000 in yearly income.

You could probably get an "umbrella" rider to your home insurance policy to cover your new venture. If you earn $1Million, you can start shopping for more comprehensive coverage..

We have a Liberty Travel near our home, also there are plenty of agents who specialize in honeymoon travel but since I was thinking of going to the Sandals resort, I could really just book it myself from their website. What have you all done to book your honeymoon?

If you are confident in booking through the Sandals resort, I think you should do it. Your honeymoon sounds pretty straightforward and you will only really benefit from using a travel agent if you have connecting flights, inter-island transfers or more than one hotel package to consider. Of course you could always go to the travel agency and see if they can get you a better rate than you can get for yourself online, but I really doubt it, since they will add their fees in to your final price.

well, we did both! originally, we had a travel agent book a resort for us. She was very sweet, helpful and tried to find a resort that we would enjoy. Some resorts are for people who like to party and socialize and some are more quiet and romantic. She found us an all-inclusive in jamaica. But alas, we were unable to afford it after some unexpected expenses came up, so we cancelled and booked our own honeymoon in a small historic town in Florida. We were able to find a beautiful b&b, book a flight on our own hours, book a rental car so we can do the things we -want- to do WHEN we want to do it. Resorts tend to make you make reservations for EVERYTHING. You have to sign up ahead of time, so you dont do anything on a whim, you're on a schedule. Travel agents can often get you good deals and it takes a lot of the stress away from the rest of your wedding planning. So, if you are headed to a resort, call an agent. if you 're not, do some research and see what you can find on your own. Good luck!

I travel often, and use a variety of methods to get tickets and make reservations, depending on what I want out of the trip and whats a better price. For what you want, it sounds very straightforward: either buy a package yourself on the website, or go to an agent. I would compare prices first, then decide. You never know if the travel agent is having a special.

We used Liberty Travel near us and had a wonderful agent. We were so pre-occupied with the wedding and she thought of everything, including making sure that we had the seats with the extra leg room, by the exit door. Things we wouldn't have even thought of. Since we went to Hawaii it made a big difference.

I was the one who planned the honeymoon when I was married and did the whole thing myself online. My now ex and I sat down and decided we wanted to spend a week in the Monterey CA area. From there I planned on where to eat on the drive up, where to stay, and made reservations.

It worked out so well because when I did it myself, I let one restaurant on the way up north (which we decided to stop at for our first dinner) know that we will be there and it's the first day of our honeymoon. This restaurant pulled out all the stops with balloons, flowers, champagne, the whole 9 yards! What a great surprise!

To sum it up though, it's very easy to plan a honeymoon yourself and wouldn't spend the extra to have someone else do it.

We usually do the research ourselves, figure out what we want to do and how much it would cost if we booked it ourselves, then get a travel agent to book it. They can usually get you the same price, and then if anything goes wrong (delayed flight, weather, etc), you have someone to call to help you.

Mention the word 'honeymoon' to a travel agent and they will double their prices straight away.

I would get a quote from both places, and go with the better deal.

Do it yourself. your gal might know your love on her, the way you care her.

The best time to buy plane tickets for holiday travel in December probably passed several months ago. Since that time is the busiest travel period of the year, seats (and low prices) tend to disappear quickly, with the cheapest seats filling up months in advance.

If you're planning travel for this year and haven't bought tickets yes, buy them as soon as you can. Given the heavy demand, airlines have little incentive to lower the price -- in fact, they're likely to only increase as cheaper seats fill up.

It really depends where u are flying to international or domestic. Once u can deteemine that factor u will know which route to take buy now or buy aq couple days before. But when u buy an international ticket to somewhere always have a visa then when u buy around these high times like holidays U can get to stay longer in the foreign country to beat the ticket costs. Domestic U should buy when the sale is going on and during the night when the airlines prices change u might get a better deal that way. also look at these websites on the web for ailine travel like farecompare the airline carriers travel agents and etc... When I buy my interantional ticket I usually price everything out on Bt travel Store and skyauction then the airlines that goes to these places and then lastly the travel agents in the country where I am flying to. I got some good deals of ticket prices in December tha last week of November last year international. Domestic is pretty good also right before christmas. They lower the prices when u are flying on the holidays like for thmaksgiving and for christmas and New years. My neice flew up last year before christmas. She got an awesome deal on plane ticket for domestic. Search the individual airlines also to and from your destination. They will have great deals also.

I'd start looking for good prices right now. If you try to look later or maybe closer to December you won't be able to find good prices on tickets. I've always found cheap prices around this time. Just remember the farther you book your ticket in advance the more chances you'll get good prices on airfare tickets.

Now! The prices are only going to go up as the time gets closer, and seats are getting filled. When they start running low on seats, they can charge an arm and a leg for what seats are left. There is always someone willing to pay the high price for those last few seats. I agree with the other person. Try looking tonight between 12am and 2am where the airline has its headquarters (ex: 12am-2am central time for United, 12am-2am eastern time for delta, 12am-2am pacific time for Virgin America...etc etc etc.) They had a big story about this on the Today show a couple months ago!!!

Definitely now as costs will begin to heavily rise and seat availability will decrease. Many people state that it does not matter which day of the week to purchase flights online, but with my experience, it does. If you are ready to book, then its best done tonight after midnight. Good Luck :)

I'm going backpacking to Ireland and Northern Ireland for two months from mid-Feb to mid-April. It's not my first backpacking trip, so I'm fairly knowledgeable on how to travel, but I've never been to Ireland before and am looking for tips. Anything specific on where a good place to meet locals is, where good pubs, cities, towns and villages to visit are, what kind of weather to expect, etc.

I am going by myself, so I'm very interested in meeting locals and fellow travellers.

Expect cool weather and rain. 60-70 in the day, 40-50 at night. Plan on cloudy and rainy days as well. Belfast is a great city with lots to do. There's a great tourist center with lots of free brochures and information of things to see and do. City center also has shopping and historical sites. There are of course, tons of castles and forts and cathedrals and churches to visit throughout the whole island. it's a great place to just explore and stop as you find something that catches your interest.

There are also good hostels, and hotels. Northern Ireland also has a great website, I linked it below. I would recommend the Giants Causeway if anything. It's unique and very scenic, lots of nice walking trails.

You can get food at any corner store, or pop in to a,most any pub. The locals are all helpful and friendly, they'll tell you where to go. Ireland and Northern Ireland both have great tourist centers with maps, local information and knowledgeable people.

You will be here for Paddy's day. Find out nearer the time where the big fireworks display is and go see it. You will not be disappointed.

Old man pubs are the place you want to visit. These are the real pubs and not amid at tourists. If you see a bunch of old men sitting at the bar drinking pints then you are in the right place. You have got to visit the West of Ireland, Kerry, Clare,Galway and Mayo. Lahinch in Co. Clare is a great place to watch the surfers do their thing. You might want go here in April.

Should I book my flight myself or go with a travel agency?

I'm going on a foreign exchange this summer with Rotary International. We have the option to either book the flight ourselves or go with a travel agency. I'm not sure what to do because I have booked plenty of flights in the past, but never an international flight. Also, I've always thought that travel agencies just rip people off.

Travel agents can usually match the fares you get on the internet (or come very close to it). What I have gotten out of travel agents that I could not do online myself are the following: (not all of these will apply to you 'cos most of this depends on what kind of deal your airline has with agents)

1. Hold a reservation for several weeks without paying.

2. Get waitlisted for a flight that was sold out online, and the agent got me on.

3. Get upgraded because the agent (corporate) knew people in that airline. (this is kind of rare, though)

4. Get free transportation to the airport. (Agent was a tour operator so no problem)

5. Agent managed to get the airline change fee waived when I couldn't travel.

6. Still sell to me at yesterday's lower fare when the fare went up online today.

And most important difference for me,

7. Buy tickets with open return.

Sometimes my agent just tells me to book it myself online when she knows she has nothing extra to offer me. It just depends on if you have any special needs.

Compare both, it's easy enough to check prices on the internet and also easy enough to call a travel agent, sometimes travel agents will have access to all the available flights and fares that may not be easily available to you, such as consolidated fares. Btw, booking an international flight is really no more difficult than a domestic flight over the internet, they just ask for a little more information. Good luck.

If you are planning on traveling a lot, learn your train/subways routes...you will save time and money. Be open minded, specially in France...many dont really care for Americans, and dont wonder off to areas that are not tourist friendly.

Dont let the other answers scare you off...you will find a lot more freedom there than here. Be respectful and try to learn some basic french, and you will get better treatement just because you are trying.

Also, in France, when you eat out, dont ask for an american type meal. Try something new...avoid Mc Donalds!!! :)

Best advice? Don't worry about it.

Airports are designed for travelers who don't even speak the language so are easy to navigate. Just about every airport has signage bilingual in the local language and english. Plus the first people off the plane will know the way, just follow the herd. Don't forget to reclaim your baggage at baggage reclaim (but you are directed there by default)

Best tip? Most people are nice. So most people will try to help.

Don't get involved in political discussions with strangers. They may blame you for any or all of the perceived ills caused by US foreign policy.

If you are going to France take the time to learn a little french. It will be appreciated by the locals.

If you are tall, try and get a seat in an 'exit' row because you can stretch your feet out. Take munchies and reading material and unopened water/drinks. Get up and stretch your feet and walk around several times during flight. When you check-in, always ask if there are any upgrades. Sometimes you can get a much better more comfortable seat for cheap. Go to duty-free; always great buys. Always know where your passport and your tickets and itinerary are for your entire trip. Don't pack valuables in your checked luggage. Don't leave valuables in hotel room unless you have in-room safe, then use it. Watch out for London pickpockets. Best to have pouch of some sort around neck or waist inside jacket at the front. Keep your passport and money there. Get everything together on your bed of what you plan to take. Pick out 1/3 of that and pack it. Take lots of money because England is very very expensive, even just a coffee and burger, ouch! Try not to drive as they drive in a totally different way (and I don't just mean on the wrong side of the road), and driving there can be very scary. Plus gas must be out of this world right now. Get a train pass - cheapest most comfortable and best way to travel Great Britain and Europe. Don't ever leave your suitcase unattended. Flights into Manchester are much cheaper than into London Heathrow if that works for you. Be sure you are aware of the items you cannot take in your carry-on; these are changing a lot and if you are going through security you may be forced to leave something behind. That happened to us - hubby has an expensive multi-tool that he keeps on his belt, so he totally forgot about it. Security said we had to leave it (was like $200) - I wasn't about to leave it, so went back into the main airport and mailed it home. It actually arrived a day after we returned, LOL. Go to all the pubs and have lots of chips with malt vinegar, mmm (that's french fries in US terms). Take a compact fold-up umbrella and rain poncho from home. They take!

My first flight was about a year ago, from Toronto to Hong Kong. (16 hours!) There were a few things I wish I'd been told before going, and a few things I picked up along the way.

Airplanes are cold. If you think, it makes sense -- the temperature outside the plane is, like, -50C. Even if you're flying to and from somewhere reasonably warm, you'll still likely want a blanket, jacket, or sweater on the plane. And airplane blankets tend to be uber-thin -- ask for an extra one as soon as you get on the plane, before everybody else gets cold.

Bring everything you can on your carry-on, in case your luggage goes missing. (Obviously, there are restrictions on liquid content and that sort of thing.) Soap, camera, glasses, an extra pair of socks and change of clothes if you can fit it... you want to be inconvenienced as little as possible. Put your contact information on top in your suitcase; if it goes missing, they can open it and easily figure out whose it is, helping it get back to you faster.

Security and Customs: possibly the two most annoying things ever. Supposedly America's even worse -- I've never flown there, but I hear they make you take off your shoes and all sorts of stupid things. Be polite but brief when talking to immigration officers. Don't volunteer info -- they'll ask you what they need or want to know. Make sure you've got all your paperwork and information available -- most countries will want to know why you're there, where you're staying, etc, and if you can answer these questions without having to dig through your luggage for that hotel's business card, life runs smoother. Don't be rude, speak clearly (especially en France, parce-que tout les personnes ne parlerai pas l'anglais!), and don't joke about being a terrorist or anything stupid like that.

Lastly, bring a camera and take lots of photos. Make sure you're in a bunch of them, so you can show people where you went, but take a bunch of random things like streets, cafes and restaurants, children.... anything that gives a sense of the atmosphere. You'll look back on those photos time and time again, so make sure you're got enough to bring back memories! (Extra memory cards for digital cameras are cheap -- carry an extra one with you if possible!) And try to pick up a bit of French before going to France -- it's much easier, and you'll avoid some of the stereotypical French 'rudeness', if you can say things like "bienvenue", "bonjour", "merci", and "s'il vous plait" (welcome, hello, thanks, and please) in the local language.

Yes, I think you're right on that one.... I agree that AMEX has higher prices. They're quite expensive.... I've booked trips both on line and with AMEX and there is a considerable difference.

I'd imagine it's not so different from where you're from. You would have basic greetings "hi/hello/how are you?" etc. Then something like:

Do your research on-line but book through a travel agent. If anything happens on the trip, ie. losing a car rental reservation, you have a recourse through the agent. You don't when you book on-line. There are no govt rules and regulations for online companies.

My wife and I loved Martinique. We stayed in Trois Ilets which is across an inlet from Fort de France. A water ferry can take you to the city and there are three beaches within walking distance from the hotel. You can also take a catamaran to St Lucia.

I recently traveled for Memorial Day Week-end so I could spend time with some friends. But, I was there early and left well after the week-end to avoid traffic and folks with road rage. Is this a sign of age or do I just prefer extended holidays? I kinda think it's a little of both.

Yes, but I never did travel on holidays even when I was younger. The crowds always reminded me of lemmings rushing to their doom.

I have avoided holiday travel for a long time now, and have not been near an airport since 1993! I do not like crowds, and travelling involves great numbers of people. I do not think that this is the sign of age, but rather a sign of the times that we live in. Everything today is RUSH, RUSH RUSH and I do not want to be a part of that. I have friends that are just as pleased to see me when it is not a holiday - so if and when I do travel it will be in off-holiday season. CJ

For me it's not a senior thing, I have always hated traveling on a holiday. I think the prices are higher, and I don't like the crowds. I would rather travel the week before or after.

It's just common sense to arrive early and leave late. I don't think it has anything to do with age. We never go anywhere on major holiday weekends because of the crowds and traffic. I hope you enjoyed yourself.

My brother is taking a car trip with his wife and new baby, 4 months old, does anyone have any travel tips on how to keep him entertained and happy?

I never traveled much when my kiddos were "babies", so I'm clueless here...

We have found the best thing to do is to travel the longest leg of the trip during the babies normal sleeping time.

We took a long trip when our daughter was 3 months old, we left at 8 pm and arrived at our destination at 5 am. She was only awake twice, once for a bottle and once for a diaper change. Of course she was sleeping through the night on a regular basis.

Keep close to their schedule as possible. If they eat, sleep, play at certain times at home, try to keep it to that. I had to take my 7 week old daughter for a 14 hour car ride when my mom passed away suddenly and she did great. Till this day we keep on your routines pretty close to normal and it has been easier to please not only her but us too.

they need to have everything in the car, and ready to go, the only things left to put in the car, should be themselves, and baby, then, time it around his mid morning, or afternoon feeding. feed him, and then immediately put him in the car and be on their way...most likely, the baby will sleep the entire time through the trip, and if he wakes up, it won't be to hard to stop maybe once for a few minutes. for the rest of the trip, if he is awake, they have toys now that can hook to the back of the seat to keep baby occupied, rattles, a favorite teether, etc. when all else fails...mommy or daddy can always sit in the back to keep baby occupied while the other drives.

we do this all the time, when we go to my moms, or out shopping, or even to the movies.

I would have them feed the baby before they leave and put him/her to sleep. That way the baby will sleep most of the way. Car rides are normally really good for a baby. They like the motion so they sleep. My babies alway would sleep better in a car. I went from St.Louis to California when my baby was 3 months. And I really had no trouble with her.

i drove my two month old son from north carolina to michigan about 650 miles and a 11 hour drive

i think the key is try leaving around 4pm or so so that way the baby is only up 4 or 5 hours and sleeps the rest of the way

take plenty of breaks those 4-5 hours and give him or her attention if possible

my wife rode in the back with the baby and i drove so it was easier

One helpful tip for feeding time if on formula is NOT to premake bottles. Bring bottles of water with and powder formula. That way the water is air temp to start and not cold out of the cooler because they won't have a warming device in the car. They can make bottles as they need them.

As far as entertaining, someone might have to sit in the back seat with the baby and play with toys with him/her.

You can try going at night or during a nap time to encourage the kid to sleep most of the time. Also have one of you in the back seat with him. How well does the child sleep in the car? My daughter used to fall asleep the instant we started driving, and was out pretty much until we stopped. then as she got older, she hates sleeping in the car and will rarely do it. So try to judge off of the kids personality and take things the kid likes to play with now, as well as a few new toys. Also,if they like certain songs or music, make sure you bring that. They might have to stop more often too if he is being breastfed or needs diaper changes. Plan on it taking more time than usual to get there. It might not take longer, but it's always better to plan for a little extra time. Hope this helps!!

Absolutely. Buy it. It's not that much money at your age and it covers sickness, trip delay, trip interruption, medical expenses, reimbursement of many things. You never know and like you said the trip was not cheap. The unexpected can happen. It's peace of mind.

That Sienna is rated at a 3500lbs towing limit, those trailers are about 3000lbs empty. You would be at the limit provided you're hooked up properly. If you're going to do it I would definitely put a tranny cooler in and do more frequent service on it as well as regular oil changes with synthetic oil. Remember also you have to keep in mind the weight you add inside trailer as well as inside the van. Pump rear tires on van to the tire's max pressure.

I personally think you would wear your vehicle out prematurely

if you tow it alot. I would trade up to an F150 or nissan titan.

you may need anti sway bars and if you combine you luggage fluid content and other things including accesorries your pushing your luck. A truck will handle so much better with a 21 ft. rv.

It would be much cheaper to stay off the strip, but you still may want to stay close. walk rather than take a cab or pubic transportation. I wouldn't rent a car. because you don't want to drive in Vegas especially near the strip and NEVER on the strip. I made the mistake and was stuck for a very long time in traffic.

I just paid for my trip overseas and my stop over accomedation in Singpare. I'm not really happy with the travel agent as I had to call her to find out the original hotel I was going to stay at did not have availability. After paying for my trip and another hotel in Singapore. I told the woman what if this hotel is not available and the waiting list comes back negative? The lady said, oh I never thought of that. I won't put your payment through then. I can't afford to pay for accomedation outside the category A hotels and when I just checked my funds the money has been taken out. This lady is supposed to be assistant manager. Perhaps I should have gone to the same travel agency but in the more well to do area where the assistants have more experience but I want to know if I will get re imberssed if I do not get a room?I am a seasoned traveller so I'm not looking for travel tips but if anyone can help me out with this Q it would be greatly appreciated!

It doesn't sound as if you've gone back to the travel agency after the payment was made and discussed it with them. This should be your first port of call.

If this doesn't work, what happens next depends on where you live. If you're in the UK then the travel agency should be ABTA bonded which means you get protection. Write to ABTA explaining the situation.

But you really need to go back to the agency first and talk it through with them.

Next time, book it yourself - it's far more reliable and you know exactly what you're getting, not some travel agency's "preferred" (read: kickback) hotel!

That is one reason, we always use a credit card. If you don't get any where with the travel agency, next step would be to put a hold on your credit card in paying the travel agency. At this point, it's all you can do.

I am planning to go to kerala in Jan month end. Looking for good travel agent who can organize nice honeymoon tour which covers all nice places with some special events for couple. If any couple has gone to kerala , please let me know ur exp and suggestions or the travel packages which has nice reviews.

I have lived several years in India and I would recommend Creative Travel in New Delhi. They do not come cheap but they are the best.

I have refered them to quite a lot of friends and all of them enjoyed a great trip. They all got more than they bargained for.

Tell them what you would like to do

e.g. staying on a houseboat (with captain & cook/steward at your service) and visit Kerala navigating on its backwaters

staying in a nice hotel (we stayed at the "Coconut Resort" if my memory serves me right : traditional Keralite bungalows reachable by boat only :-)) .... a place where you get really pampered and that can be the start of a few days journey on the backwaters where you can visit plantations (spices) and other interesting things.

Just ask them to suggest the best trip ever and they will give you a few alternatives for an unforgettable honeymoon trip.

They'll organize everything for you. If you so wish, you'll get a guide when needed.

Be aware that, most of the time, when there is a price difference for a same quotation it general means that you get to stay in a 1 or 2 * lower category of hotels which is not recommended (personal experience) in India as this generally means that they are not up to what we consider our cleanlyness & hygienic standards.

The best thing to do is to compare different quotations offering the same itinary and hotels.

ready made honey moon are all useless and stereotyped. try something different. I have no idea about your budget but I can give some idea:

1. try a nights stay on a tree house

2. try house boats in back waters

3. go for spa therapies

4. a nice massage for both of you will a good idea

So plan your trip your self, do something unique and spice your trip

People go abroad these days for honeymoon and mind you its cheap these days.

South East Asian countries are so full of culture and are so beautiful. I travelled extensively around this area during the i moved to the philippines for 5 years (im australian hehe) But yeah there was some beautiful places in the Philippines that truly stuck in my mind. There was this place called "Coco Grove Beach Resort"and i was awed at the size of the place and how few rooms there were and how beautiful...and cheap the place was! i stayed there for like 3 months instead of staying at the dorm hehe. Two things stay in your mind: how amazingly nice and professional the staff are..they like make it personal without over stepping the boundaries hehe...they remember everyones names and joke around and make u feel at home. it was so awesome. and its so beautiful too! like an island paradise...man im starting sound like an ad. hehe but it realy was great. i talked to so many other guests and they were all happy too =) its all by word of mouth and they always come back. if ya wanted to check it out ever, its on the island of Siquijor...and i think they have a website but i dont know it. oops lol but i think it might be like cocogrove.com.ph or something hehe like it was simple =D hope u i cud help! it truly was a great place

I have been eyeing on Taman Negara Forest Reserve Pahang for quite some time now. I am not much of a beach person, unless if the beach is still of its natural state, i would be interested. So i am now more into tropical greens. They have water/river rapid activities, mountain hiking etc. The best part is i heard that they really preserved the forest, something that i truly value. I would bring my son along so he could learn to preserve nature.

Dave, why were u so unlucky when u came to KL..Now u hate malaysia so much because of that knife-point incident. I hope that fellow is in jail for god sakes. Just to share with you all, i was at a gun-point in Manila at 2am when i came out of their Hard Rock Cafe. I refused to accept the drinks this guy sent to my table and later on refused to dance with him. He got really mad and waited for me outside the HRC. (yeah, very gentleman of him..) When i came out, he started screaming hysterically in a language i did not understand and pointed the gun on my forehead. The bouncers disappeared into thin air, i guess they were scared too. It was a good 30minutes of staring at the gun (was getting crossed eyed too by doing so) thinking he was going to create a hole on my forehead, i thought i would never survive to even have my last stick of cigarette. Then his friend came and tried to talk him out of it. Cut the story short, i am here today. Man, i was lucky.

I have travelled to Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines in South East Asia and the most annoying vacation is that one in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia when someone robbed me at knife point. From there, I stopped travelling to South East Asia. But the four countries are generally beautiful ....

depends what you're after, good food, exprienceing other cultures, scenery, safety, etc,etc... Southeast Asia offered the best deals for your money(usd, euro,yen)

I always crate my dogs in the car. If they get sick or go to the bathroom before the next stop it is contained.

A favorite toy.

Always walk on a leash

Make sure tags are current.

Make sure the hotel you are staying in allows pets before you leave. Or sneak them in the room, If he is a quiet dog and you don't have to leave for any length of time.

If he is use to traveling in cars you should have no problems. I have taken several of my dogs on road trips.

I was advised to give my dog human travel sickness pill just prior to leaving on a trip..its works a treat..keeps him calm and quiet.

I go once a month on a 12 hour round-trip to my daughter's home. My puppy goes along. Right before we leave I take her for a walk, I then give her some Benadryl and then place her in her travel kennel. We stop at the halfway point for a bathroom break, a drink, and to stretch our legs and then it's back on the road. She doesn't make a sound the whole trip. She is 5 months old.

You know Im not sure really how to help you all my dogs love to go "bye bye" lol You mention the word and they get excited. They are a little hyper the first min in the car but settle down and stick their noses out the window. I start taking them in car rides as soon as I get the pup so they can get use to it.

Now my husband's puppy dont do so good he gets car sick sometimes so if we are going somewhere and taking the dogs we dont let her eat or drink about fours hrs before we go and she is good to go

Answer: Take the dog to a kennel.

Your vet can actually give you some pills to "minorly sedate" your pet (may depend on length of trip) - and I would recommend keeping it in a contained cage if feasible, with a favorite blanket/pillow etc. Give it a treat when it first gets in there, and then let it get comfy & snooze...

Buy one of those dog seatbelts- very important.

Bring a comfy bed for the dog.

Stop every 2-3 hours so the dog can get a pee break & stretch its legs.

Bring some anti-nausea medication for your dog, if its your first big trip with your dog, it may get car sick.

Go to your vet ahead of time & get some sedatives just in case your dog freaks out, you can have a car accident if the dog distracts you.

Never let your dog stick its head out the window. I have a friend whos collie was blinded by dirt that flew into the dog's eyes at a high speed. Also I have heard of dogs being decapitated.

We travel all over the country, often with more than a dozen dogs. Take my word for it there is absolutely no alternative to a dog crate. The dog is safer, and happier, and so are any people that are in the same vehicle.

We booked our HM through Liberty Travel. We got a very fair price from them. They were only about $100 more than Costco, but this way we got to deal with someone face to face. The agent we dealt with was super-sweet. We loved her so much that we brought her back a souvenir and brought in some pictures to show her. I e-mailed her all these silly little requests and she took care of all of them.

If you have AAA they have a free travel agency that you can use. Just go to one of the local offices.

If you're traveling out of the country, an agent can help you obtain a passport and any visas that are needed. They can also answer basic questions like typical weather and how to get around.

If you're an experienced traveler, that might not be important to you. If you're not an experienced traveler, it can be invaluable. I formerly worked for a major travel website, so you would probably expect me to say that everyone should use the Internet. Not true. Many of our customers could book their own trips, especially simple ones, without any problems. However, I also saw a lot of "amateur" mistakes that a good travel agent wouldn't make. Use Somak travel. They have awesome packages, I'd recommend the Seychelles package. They have travel agency offices all over the world, and they give you all the information you need as far as visa's and other travel documents. Hi guys, my name is sofia, I live in Los Angeles. Help! My boyfriend and I would really like to get away this year, at the end of December, possibly beginning of January for an eight or nine day vacation, Our budget is limited, and Im really vexd on where we should go. I'm planning a vacation to chicago and I need all the travel tips you got.

Sounds like fun! Not sure if you arranged your travel yet, so I'll include a few tips for that as well:

* Shop around for airfare to Chicago if you're traveling. I usually check a site like Expedia.com for relative comparisons of airfare. Once you've found the cheapest option, check that airline's website. Usually the fare is a bit cheaper there.

* However, if you buy a package of airfare + hotel, sites like Expedia will usually give you a discount, so check the package price vs. the individual costs for airfare + hotel.

* Do some research on the basics -- activities, sights, restaurants. You might find discounts online, or realize that you need a reservation to try a famous restaurant. You might also want to buy a guidebook to carry around. Try these websites for research:

I want to own my own Travel Agency but i want to have a business that would be very lucrative and make a lot of money. I love to travel and so i want to own a business that is directly related to that. Plz tell me if i should pursue this since a lot of ppl go online to make bookings now and that can seriously hurt a travel agency.

My husband and I actually own an online Travel Agency. We just point people to our website and they do all their own bookings. They are given an 800 number if there are difficulties and the vendors will do the follow up. We love what we do. Our business has the potential to make as much money as the work we put into it. We help our customers when they need it, but the majority of the time they already know what they want. Why choose my website? Jack gives you great advice. The only way you are going to be able to compete successfully with an online Travel Agency is on the basis of service. Only by offering a higher level of personalized service will you be able to differentiate yourself from companies who are simply selling tickets and renting rooms.

It's a tough industry; I know a couple of people who are travel agents, and the advent of internet booking and sales has really changed the way they've done business.

No. A travel agency generally used to be a fairly good business. However, as you noted, many people are now using the internet to book their own travel. And, the airlines and cruise ships have cut back on their rebates to travel agencies. They had to as they are trying to cut their expenses. Also, with the current poor economy, most people are cutting back on their vacation travel. If you want to sample how to run a trip, I suggest you join a local ski or travel club. You could help to organize a trip and see what is involved. With some experience, you could be in charge of organizing a trip. This would give you an opportunity to see just what is involved in the travel business. With that experience, you could then work for a cruise line or a Vegas hotel. However, dont expect to get rich.
